Patina novel9/7/2023 ![]() ![]() More than the purists believe, the new practice of publishing independently online has become an entirely legitimate way to be read and a legitimate form of independent publishing and building readership. With the rise of the blog and the many permissions we not so incidentally give each other to share and support one another’s work– some of us carrying on in both old and new worlds– we get to bypass all of that rigamarole. ![]() I remember those days well, when Lyn Lifshin, Marge Piercy, Carolyn Forche, Mary Karr and I were among those who hung in until we could be and would be taken seriously, our work appearing in the infamous The Little Magazine, in the early Ms., and other signature journals of the 70’s. with a dissipated, alienated voice in short lines, emotion controlled. In truth, not much seems to have changed since the days in which male editors controlled the literary magazines and if you were a woman writer you had to write like the male poets du jour to get published, i.e. She is in fact, among the best of the poets who post their work online to make it available to a readership with a click, bypassing the tiresome ceremonies of submission, enduring rejection, resubmitting ad infinitum until at last, a placement. However, it can easily be read as a standalone text. ![]() This is book number two in the Run series (called Track series in the United States) and loosely a sequel to Jason Reynolds' Ghost. The dialogue is crisp, the characters are believable, and it's a beautiful, flawless reading experience that will hook reluctant readers (especially those into sports). Jason Reynolds's writing doesn’t hit a single bad note here. When you’ve finished reading the book, you’ll be as proud of Patina as if you knew her. It is a seriously great moral for all the over-achievers out there. So how to do you cope when your life is at the limits of what you can realistically do?Īt the heart of this novel is the message that you need to let yourself rely on other people and work as a team, whether that's on a running team or in real life, and to be proud of yourself and what you do achieve. Patina takes responsibility for everything and everyone – even her school project with the posh girls at her new mainly white school. After her dad died, her mum developed diabetes so bad that she had to have her legs removed and is so unwell that Patina and her adorable little sister live with her Uncle Tony and his wife Emily, who the girls call Mumly. Elite runner Patina is a girl with a lot on her plate and she takes her responsibilities heartbreakingly seriously. ![]()
